New Jersey fan club:
# voices celebrate the garden state
An anthology about New Jersey from the creator of Jersey Collective
about the book
New Jersey is not like other places. Maybe everyone feels that way about where they're from, but from what I've seen, New Jerseyans are fierce defenders of their often misunderstood home state. We [plaster our cars with stickers that say "Jersey Strong," we will fight you /, get tattoos of our state], we shout things like "N.J. ALL DAY" when drunk and roll our eyes when you ask us about Jersey Shore or the Real Housewives
This book feels like being taken by the hand by a friend who will show you all of their favorite places--the historically and culturally and personally significant, the most scenic, and the weirdest. At times, it will feel like you are being let in on a secret, and at other times you will feel like you know exactly what they're talking about when they bring up [teen night/Wawa at three am/]
A literary look at New Jersey's history, this book is eclectic and full of surprises. It is less of a travel guide and more of a celebration. It is well-researched and comprehensive
It will teach you things and make you laugh and introduce you to writers, photographers, and artists whose work you will just love
You will want to keep a copy next to your bed and maybe one in your car and the next time someone says something rude about your home, you will arm yourself with 500 pages that
You will use it to discover new places and people and stories and you will see yourself in its pages
I feel that everything I have done over the past several years--visit historic sites, search for the state's best diners, --
has been leading to this: a book that combines what I have learned on guided tours, what I have seen hidden in archives, and who I have met along the way
brings together work from people I've connected with through Jersey Collective,
The book will be a highly collaborative anthology that strives to be as diverse as possible with its stories and contributors. If you have a story to tell, I want to hear it.
Contributors will be paid upon acceptance and will also receive a copy of the book. Pay varies depending on the type of piece (personal essay, reported piece, illustration, photography, etc.).
Don't think you're a writer? I'm still interested in your story. I created an extensive survey that you can find here. You can fill out as much or little of it as you'd like. I will contact you if I'm interested in using parts of your response or if I want to help you develop your story further.
Please share this project with anyone you think may be interested. It is important to me that the demographics of our contributors is as diverse as possible in regards to age, race, gender, and background.
